Happy Retirement, and Farewell cakes!

The week I came home from vacation I had two cakes to get done, one for my Uncle's Mom's retirement party, and one for my good friend Kate Spillane who is leaving to attend grad school at Duke!!!! So they were both big occasions. Kate's party was held in AC and was a great time, she loved her cake but had nothing to cut it with! So people literally dug into it! Wish I had taken a photo of that. Happy Retirement Carol, and Farewell and good luck to Kate!!!!!

The school colors where Carol worked were blue and red... so this cake is very patriotic

Carol's cake was Funfetti, and vanilla buttercream icing

For Katie's cake I used a vintage Duke blue devil logo for the shadows of the blue devil.

Kate's cake was funfetti, and Oreo butter cream icing.

Congratulations Denise!!!!

Next we have a Giant Cupcake cake for Denise's High school Graduation! This cake was a little bit of a pain because the POWER WENT OUT!!!!!!! Yes that's right, the power was out from a huge storm that week, so it caused some heat issues, and light issues for working on the cake! I had completely finished the cake, and had stored it over night, and in the morning my mom woke me up to tell me the cake was sliding backwards! AND to make matters worse all the fondant I had used to make the bottom look like cupcake paper had slid and cracked. Good thing my mom woke me up early, and delivery wasn't for several hours. I managed to fix it, and in my opinion made it look better then the first time around. So congratulations again Denise! Hope you enjoyed your giant pink and orange cupcake!

those are all the before I fixed it shots. As you can see in the last photo the fondant was falling down and bunching at the bottom

Denise's cake was made of funfetti cakes, and orange and hot pink dyed white cake, with Chocolate buttercream icing.

Congrats Chrissy! & Happy Birthday Lexi!

I have been pretty busy lately with cakes, and just regular work in general, so my apologies for not updating my blog as often as I should have in the past few weeks. But these next few posts should cover everything I have done since the last time i wrote!

1st off we have a cake for my boyfriend's neighbor's daughter Chrissy. Chrissy graduated from Upper Darby Highschool this year, and their colors are gold and purple so her mom asked for those colors along with a gold crown on top. Along with the graduation cake, they asked for 50 cupcakes and a smaller cake for their niece Lexi, who I was told thought that her aunt had forgotten her birthday! So both cakes were a big surprise to both girls. The party and the cakes ended up being a total success! So congratulations Chrissy, and Happy Birthday Lexi again!

Chrissy and Lexi's cakes were both funfetti with vanilla buttercream icing

"Don't Panic"

This week I am working on a two tiered Graduation cake, a small birthday cake, and 50 cupcakes. Did I mention this is for one single order?! So needless to say, I have a lot of work to do, so I got a jump on things this past Sunday, started doing most of the fondant work (50 graduation caps for 50 cupcakes, plus the details for the actual cakes) And during this I had to make my mom a birthday cake because her birthday was on Monday, so I preheat the oven, get everything going, finally get the cake in, and I am happy because I am getting things done in a timely fashion. Mom's cake is finished I ice it, put some fruit on it make it look delicious. Turn off the oven. This is where the trouble starts. I continue to go about my business cutting out squares and putting the caps together. Go to preheat the oven again a few hours later, put the cake in.. and my dad comes in and starts sniffing, "why does it smell like gas in here?" he asks.. Well apparently the oven didn't light up like it's supposed to. Awesome. I of course went into panic mode not knowing what I would possibly do if the oven didn't work for the rest of the week, so of course my first instinct is to start calling friends and planning what night I could come over and borrow their oven to bake and get this cake made.

So last night for my mom's birthday, we got chinese food since she just got surgery and wasn't feeling well enough to go out to dinner, and of course there were fortune cookies. I crack mine open after eating, and check out the fortune "don't panic." Of course at first I was like seriously, that's all the fortune i get? don't panic? it took a couple of minutes to be like, damn.. pretty good fortune considering my oven decided to stop working before i even got to bake anything for this order! I ended up going to my friend's grandmother's house to bake some of the cake last night, and today we're getting our oven fixed as I write this, which is a huge relief! And from here on out, when I even begin to think of freaking out over cake, I will have to remember what my very wise fortune cookie had to say, "don't panic."

Stay tuned for some new photos of this week's cake.
and next week even more new stuff!

Edible Books--Where the Wild Things Are

I always see flyers, and hear things about edible book contests, and I never thought hey i should enter something in one of those. But recently my good friend Dawn told me that the library she is working at was having their first annual edible book contest, and she told me I should def. submit a cake. At first i was a little hesitant to do something just because I know how time consuming it is, but i decided to enter anyway after much peer pressure. So here are photos of my crowd favorite winner Where the Wild Things Are cake.

I was very happy with the way it turned out, and I am glad I participated.
